Making “Gibberish”

I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to listen to and review my album. I’m especially appreciative of Chris Richards’ encouraging article in Thursday’s Washington Post and the spotlight he shone on this record:

Songwriters sometimes sing unintelligible syllables to lay down a guide melody during the creative process. Here’s an amusing example of this with my voice running through a very strict pitch correction processor. Originally posted on YouTube.

Based on the feedback, this one’s a favorite – even without the words! Shout out to Rafik Raphaël Mhoumadi who bought my album in France and was wondering whether I really care about my audience – please forgive me for concentrating on making music and rehearsing and running my business and making general updates for everyone instead of personally commenting on your facebook profile! I appreciate you all very much – individually and collectively.

Come To Dinner

So people have been asking whether I really run my campaign. The answer is 100% YES. I make the updates. I write the posts. I manage the editing process, etc. etc. Here’s a look at an experiment I conducted while on radio promo tour in San Francisco:

That’s right. I am where I say I am. Come see me anytime. Thanks Dane, Kyle, Chachi, and Jasmine for taking the time out to come hang with me.

Revisiting “Just Right”

After many of my songs began to leak into the blogosphere, I decided to go back into the studio and add a few elements to make the album versions of the records special. This clip opens with me playing back an extended instrumental arrangement of I-R-I-N-A with some overdubs by my boys Jermaine Parrish on drums and Al Carty on bass.

Inspired, I decided to re-visit one of my favorite songs called ‘Just Right’. Here’s a look at that session. I had to rebuild it from scratch as one of my hard drives had crashed and many sessions had been lost. I love the new elements, and here’s to you loving them too…

My Posters!

I’ve always seen adhesive posters (snipes) decorating the walls and fences of New York City. Sunday was the first day I saw myself on those snipes. We (Evan, Willie, and Shiv were with me) had just touched down after our two day trip to Germany and were driving through Harlem on the way to my new spot when I spotted a series of snipes on the corner of 125th & 5th avenue:

I had to stop the car and jump out. I’ll always remember this moment. Shiv was smiling in the back seat in suspended disbelief. He’s worked with me since he was 17 and in high school. He’s actually responsible for the touring I do in Germany. This is big to him, big to me, and big to anyone who knows the journey it’s been to get one of these snipes with my name, my picture AND my release date. Amazing.

MTV Detox

Last week, I spent a few hours at MTV to do radio (yes, they have radio), on-line, and TV promo for the album.  I ran into Sway while shooting a segment with Jim Cantiello, and talked music with Jayson Rodriguez for a news clip. All of this media should run shortly. Until it’s public, this is really all I can give you (at the Network’s request):

Here’s the first piece to go live – from the MTV Remote Control Blog. I show up at about 3:41:
